This tradition reenacts a powerful episode from the Ramayana. After Shurpanakha’s insult, Khardushan marched with his army to fight Shri Ram. To shield her Lord, Maa Sita is said to have assumed the fierce form of Kali, walking before Ram’s chariot and destroying Khardushan.
For more than a hundred years, this divine act has been celebrated in Prayagraj. The chosen devotee who embodies Maa Kali is selected six months in advance and must live a life of discipline and purity before the sacred moment.
