#News | The Assam Cabinet has approved the Assam Muslim Marriage Registration Act, 2026, to streamline the registration of Muslim marriages across the state.
Under the earlier system, Kazis were involved in solemnising Muslim marriages but were not officially responsible for registering marriages under a government-controlled registration system.
Under the new framework, the Assam government will establish a dedicated mechanism for the registration of Muslim marriages, with designated authorities tasked solely with registering marriages and maintaining official records.
The move is aimed at ensuring a smoother, more systematic and officially documented process for the registration of Muslim marriages in Assam.
