Forts, gates, and the Tapi.
Before the diamonds, before the highrises, Surat was a walled river-port that the whole world wanted a piece of. The physical bones of old Surat, still standing:
1. Surat Castle, built by 1546 to turn back the Portuguese
2. The wall and gates thrown up after Shivaji sacked the city in 1664
3. Gopi Talav, the lake dug around 1510 that gave the city its name
4. The Tapi ghats that loaded the ships that made Surat rich
5. The bridges that now leap the river the ferries once crossed
