A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Flores region early Saturday, August 15, killing at least 38 people and collapsing homes and buildings. The quake, which struck at a depth of 15km near Nagekeo, triggered widespread panic and dozens of aftershocks, including 6.9 and 6.1-magnitude tremors.
A tsunami warning was briefly issued before being lifted after authorities detected no significant sea-level changes. Rescue and assessment operations are ongoing.
