Koedijck never saw Agra on his planned court journey, and Surat became the turning point. Isaack Koedijck was a Dutch painter whose proposed appointment at the Mughal court fell through. Company officials objected to his wife and children accompanying him to the travelling court. These five stops trace selected places in his documented life, in date order. 1. Leiden: Our first stop is Leiden, where a record places Koedijck on 18 January 1645.
2. Amsterdam: On 8 March 1645, Koedijck witnessed painter Karel Slabbaert's wedding in Amsterdam.
3. Batavia: Koedijck and his wife reached Batavia aboard the Saphier on 4 August 1651.
4. Surat: By late 1651, Koedijck was in Surat. His planned journey to serve as a painter at the Mughal court was abandoned.
5. Haarlem: After returning to the Netherlands in 1659, Koedijck made his will in Haarlem on 28 April 1667. The five location photographs show modern views of those cities, not his homes or scenes from his lifetime.
