Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended the proposed changes to Kaziranga’s Eco-Sensitive Zone, stressing that conservation must go hand in hand with the livelihoods and development needs of local communities.
He cited concerns from Bokakhat and Kaliabor over restrictions on fishing, local businesses and traditional activities, while questioning the wider economic impact of a 10-km ESZ. Sarma said the focus should remain on finding a balance between protecting Kaziranga and ensuring sustainable local development.
