The Third BIMSTEC Conference on Traditional Medicine Knowledge, Genetic Resources & Intellectual Property Rights commenced today in Goa, organised by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, with the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Goa as the nodal institute. The two-day conference is being held alongside the Second Meeting of the BIMSTEC Nodal Group on Traditional Medicine Knowledge, Genetic Resources & Intellectual Property Rights.
Ms. Monalisa Das, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, highlighted the role of the BIMSTEC Task Force for Traditional Medicine (BTFTM) in strengthening regional cooperation in research, education, capacity building, standardisation, pharmacopoeial development and regulatory cooperation. Prof. Vaidya P.K. Prajapati, Director, AIIA, emphasised conservation of traditional knowledge and equitable benefit-sharing, while Mr. Kadirkamu Kandasamy Yoganaadan, Director – Science, Technology & Innovation and Health and Human Resource Development Division, BIMSTEC, underlined the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening health systems and preserving traditional medicine heritage.
The conference brings together representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand to deliberate on traditional knowledge documentation, genetic resources, IPR, access and benefit-sharing, prior informed consent, community rights, TKDL, AI and responsible innovation.
