Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that the NHPC reservoir at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project played a crucial role in protecting Lakhimpur and Dhemaji from severe flooding during this year’s monsoon.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said the reservoir retained a large volume of water flowing down from Arunachal Pradesh, significantly reducing the flood surge downstream. He stated that this helped prevent a major flood situation in both districts.

Sarma also dismissed concerns over a possible “water bomb” from the dam, saying the reservoir was operated in a way that helped moderate the river flow rather than worsen flooding.

He added that the reservoir’s role this year demonstrated how proper dam management can help reduce flood risks in vulnerable downstream areas.
