Elephant Runs Amok During Shivamogga Dasara Jamboo Savari; Silver Howdah Falls, Procession Cancelled
Shivamogga, October 21, 2026 (SatyaNewsAlert): The traditional Dasara Jamboo Savari procession in Shivamogga, Karnataka, was abruptly halted on Wednesday after an elephant carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari suddenly turned back and ran through the streets, triggering panic among spectators.
The incident occurred shortly after the procession commenced from Shivappa Nayaka Palace in the Kote area. As the elephant, Somanna, proceeded along Kote Road carrying the approximately 450-kg silver howdah, locally known as the ambari, it suddenly changed direction and ran back. The sudden movement caused the howdah to slip and fall to the ground, reportedly sustaining minor damage.
The unexpected incident sent spectators scrambling for safety. According to reports, two cars and three motorbikes were damaged as the elephant moved along the procession route. However, no confirmed details regarding injuries were immediately available.
Forest Department personnel, veterinary officers and police swiftly intervened to control the situation. Police personnel managed the crowd and cleared the area to prevent further danger.
After efforts to restrain the elephant, veterinary officers administered a tranquiliser to bring Somanna under control. The animal was subsequently taken to Kote Seetharamanjaneya Temple, where it was reported to be recovering after being tranquilised.
Following the incident, organisers called off the Jamboo Savari procession, disrupting the traditional Dasara celebrations in the city.
According to reports, elephant Sagar had initially been selected and trained to carry the ceremonial ambari during Shivamogga Dasara. However, after Sagar reportedly developed leg pain, Somanna was chosen at the last minute to take over the responsibility.
The incident has raised questions about Somanna's preparation for the demanding role, as Wednesday's procession marked the elephant's first time carrying the ambari during the event.
The exact cause of the elephant's sudden behaviour has not yet been officially established. Further details are awaited regarding the circumstances leading to the incident and the animal's condition.
The episode has renewed concerns over elephant handling, adequate training and crowd safety during large-scale religious and cultural processions.
