#News || Lakhimpur has a new reason to celebrate as costume designer Purandar Swargiary from Nakari puts Assam’s rich indigenous heritage on the national stage.
Swargiary has designed a stunning national costume for Miss Universe India 2026, drawing inspiration from the vibrant culture of the Bodo community and Bagurumba—the traditional “Butterfly Dance” of the Bodo people.
The costume is more than a fashion statement; it is a visual celebration of identity, nature and Assam’s cultural diversity. Its design beautifully captures the graceful movement and symbolism associated with Bagurumba while incorporating elements that represent the deep connection between the Bodo community and nature.
Adding another distinctly Assamese touch, the costume also features the one-horned rhinoceros, an iconic symbol of Assam and its wildlife heritage.
The look was brought to life with Pinky Basumatary as the model, while the blouse was designed by Alari Boutique Store. The striking butterfly drone element was created by RE Aero Events, with the entire project managed and directed by Jaiklong Basumatary.
For Lakhimpur, the creation is particularly significant as Purandar Swargiary, hailing from Nakari, has taken a piece of the region’s creative talent and Assam’s indigenous cultural heritage to a national platform.
From the rhythms of Bagurumba to the majestic rhino, the costume tells an Assamese story through fashion—proving that traditional culture can be both deeply rooted and spectacularly contemporary.
