The firefly was found at only 10 out of 29 surveyed locations across grasslands, scrublands and semi-evergreen forests, suggesting that the species has a very limited natural distribution. Detailed morphological examinations and DNA-based analysis confirmed it as a distinct species. The researchers named it after Mawsynram to honour the place of discovery and recognise the Khasi community’s long-standing efforts to conserve forests, sacred groves and local biodiversity. With this discovery, the number of known Pygoluciola species worldwide has increased to 29, while India now records five species under this rare firefly genus.
