
Ammonia Gas Leak at Seafood Export Unit in Tamil Nadu Kills Seven, Over 70 Workers Affected
Chennai, June 21: At least seven people lost their lives and more than 70 workers were affected following a major ammonia gas leak at a seafood export company in Periyapalayam, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue operations and medical treatment for the affected workers continue.
According to preliminary reports, the toxic gas leak occurred inside the seafood processing facility, triggering panic among workers and nearby residents. Several victims reportedly collapsed after inhaling the gas and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), assisted by specialised Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) response teams, launched an immediate rescue and containment operation. Emergency personnel worked under strict safety protocols to evacuate workers, assist the injured and prevent the spread of the hazardous gas.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay expressed grief over the tragedy and ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. He directed a three-member committee to investigate the cause of the leak and submit its report within 24 hours.
The Chief Minister stated that stringent action would be taken against those found responsible for the incident. He also announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
Authorities have sealed off the affected area and are closely monitoring the situation. Further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the leak and assess compliance with industrial safety standards.
