#NATION | The Delhi High Court has ruled that two consenting adults have the right to choose their partners and live together, saying parents, relatives or friends cannot interfere with that choice.
Justice Saurabh Banerjee made the observation while granting protection to a couple who alleged that the woman’s father and brother were threatening them over their relationship.
The court said that although a live-in relationship is not legally the same as marriage, a relationship between consenting adults is “akin to marriage” in terms of their right to live together by choice.
The court also said that societal morals and prejudices cannot override the fundamental rights to life, liberty and personal choice.
