
#News | Padma Shri awardee and renowned environmentalist Jadav Payeng, popularly known as the “Forest Man of India”, has reportedly been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) after suddenly falling ill.
Payeng is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Reports indicate that he is recovering under medical care, although further details about his health condition have not been disclosed.
Payeng is widely known for transforming a barren sandbar along the Brahmaputra River into the Molai Forest near Majuli. Over several decades, he planted and nurtured trees, helping create a forest spanning around 1,360 acres. His remarkable contribution to environmental conservation earned him the Padma Shri in 2015.
News of his hospitalisation has drawn concern across Assam, with people wishing the veteran environmentalist a speedy recovery. His decades-long efforts towards forest conservation have made him a widely recognised figure in Assam and beyond.
