Friendly Purple Leaf Blue
A memorable highlight of the Butterfly Walk was the close encounter with a Purple Leaf Blue butterfly. The butterfly repeatedly landed on participants’ hands, clothes and even their heads, and continued to follow the group during the walk. Participants described it as an unusually “friendly” butterfly.
However, this behaviour was not friendly in the human sense. The butterfly was likely attracted to salts and minerals present in human sweat. Butterflies are known to engage in a behaviour called puddling, during which they obtain essential minerals and salts from moist surfaces, soil, mud, and sometimes animal sweat. This fascinating observation gave participants a unique opportunity to witness butterfly behaviour at very close range.
