#assam: The Assam government has announced October 17, 2026, as an additional public holiday on the occasion of Durga Puja. The decision was taken at the state Cabinet meeting held on September 24 and announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The additional holiday comes as October 17 falls on a Saturday, immediately before the existing Durga Puja holidays beginning October 18. The move will extend the holiday period for state government employees to five days, giving them additional time to celebrate the festival and spend time with their families.
According to the Assam government’s 2026 holiday calendar, October 18 is observed for Kati Bihu and Durga Puja, followed by Durga Puja and Vijaya Dashami holidays from October 19 to 21.
The Cabinet’s decision was announced alongside other Durga Puja-related measures, including a 20% bonus for workers of Assam Tea Corporation Limited (ATCL) tea gardens.
