Mumbai is known for its wealth, ambition and never ending hustle. But what about the air we breathe?
On 9 October 2026, The Times of India’s air quality tracker reported Mumbai’s AQI at 255. Other trackers showed different readings, so the figure should always be checked against its source and reporting time.
So what is making Mumbai’s air more polluted?
• Vehicle emissions from the city’s constant traffic
• Construction dust from redevelopment and infrastructure projects
• Road dust from busy roads and ongoing works
• Weather changes after the monsoon that can allow pollutants to accumulate
The biggest concern is fine particulate matter such as PM2.5, which can travel deep into the lungs. Prolonged exposure to polluted air can affect respiratory and cardiovascular health.
Mumbai’s air quality can also vary significantly from one neighbourhood to another. A citywide number does not tell the whole story.
Check local readings before heading out and take extra care when pollution levels are high.
A city’s progress should not come at the cost of the air its people breathe.
