Planning a movie night in Mumbai? Your ticket could get more expensive in the future. The BMC has proposed raising the entertainment tax for AC cinema halls and multiplexes from ₹60 to ₹400 per ticket, a 570% increase. Non-AC cinema halls could see the tax rise from ₹45 to ₹200. But this is only a proposal for now. The revised rates still need approval from the Maharashtra government and will apply only after being officially notified. Existing rates continue until then. The proposal also includes a 100% tax exemption for venues screening Marathi and Gujarati films and hosting Marathi and Gujarati plays and concerts. The Bombay High Court has directed that firecrackers should not be burst on Mumbai’s public roads amid concerns over noise and air pollution. The court has also taken suo motu cognisance of rising noise pollution during the festive season and sought details from the Maharashtra government on the enforcement of existing rules. A tragic incident unfolded near a Ganapati pandal in Lalbaug early Sunday morning. An 8 year old girl and a woman died after being electrocuted near the Kalachowki Vibhag Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal on Dattaram Lad Marg around 2:20 am. Four others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The incident took place amid heavy crowds during the ongoing Ganapati festival and has once again raised concerns about safety arrangements around crowded festival spaces. IIT Bombay B.Tech student allegedly died by suicide on Friday, September 18, with the incident triggering a student protest on the Powai campus.
