21 years ago today Mumbai did not just get rain. The city drowned. 26 July 2005. 944 mm rain in 24 hours. The highest ever in 100 years. Trains stopped midway. Cars were floating on roads. The Mithi river entered homes. Lakhs of people were stuck on roads with no food no network and no way to go home. More than 500 people never returned home that day. But if we remember the flood we also have to remember the people. Strangers who opened their doors. Neighbours who cooked for 50 people. Office boys who gave shelter on office floors. The Kolis who took their boats out to save lives. That is the real story of 26 July. Mumbai stopped but Mumbaikars kept going.
