Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that the NHPC reservoir at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project played a crucial role in protecting Lakhimpur and Dhemaji from severe flooding during this year’s monsoon. Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said the reservoir retained a large volume of water flowing down from Arunachal Pradesh, significantly reducing the flood surge downstream. He stated that this helped prevent a major flood situation in both districts. Sarma also dismissed concerns over a possible “water bomb” from the dam, saying the reservoir was operated in a way that helped moderate the river flow rather than worsen flooding.
