The story of Mahalaya is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and the timeless traditions of Bengal. It marks the beginning of Devipaksha, the sacred period when devotees prepare to welcome Maa Durga to her maternal home on Earth.

According to Hindu mythology, Maa Durga descended to defeat Mahishasura, the demon who had challenged the balance of the universe. Her victory represents the eternal triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and divine power over arrogance.

But in Bengal, Mahalaya is much more than a mythological beginning. It is the haunting melody of Mahishasuramardini, the powerful voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra echoing through the early morning silence, the fragrance of shiuli flowers, the beauty of white kash phool swaying in autumn winds, and the first whispers of Durga Puja in every Bengali heart.
