“Why Come to Court? You Could Have Protested,” CJI Surya Kant Remarks on Reservation Plea
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made a light-hearted remark during a Supreme Court hearing on a petition seeking changes to reservation in Lok Sabha and State Assembly constituencies. The petition was filed by a voter from Kadipur Assembly Constituency (191) in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district, arguing that the seat has remained reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) since 1952. The petitioner claimed that only a few families have benefited politically over the past seven decades and requested a change in its reservation status. The Supreme Court remarked that it is not the “third house of Parliament.”
