Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally launched the ‘Assam Bamboo Bicycle’ in Guwahati on October 2, marking a push towards sustainable transportation and greater use of Assam’s bamboo resources. The launch was held at Sati Radhika Shanti Udyan in Uzanbazar on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
The project, undertaken by Pune-based Bamboo India Private Limited, involves an investment of around ₹15 crore and aims to establish Assam as a hub for bamboo bicycle manufacturing. Production is planned at the Bamboo Park in Chaygaon, with an initial target of around 1,000 bicycles per month. The project is expected to create 50–100 direct jobs in its first year.
The bicycles, made using bamboo sourced from Assam, have received quality and safety certification from recognised institutions including the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The bicycles will also be displayed at parks across Guwahati to gather public feedback.
