
#News || North Lakhimpur: The Assam Government has announced a major investment in higher education, with North Lakhimpur University set to receive ₹100 crore for infrastructure development under the Assam Budget 2026–27.
Presenting the Budget in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the funding will be released in phases to strengthen the university’s academic and physical infrastructure. North Lakhimpur University is among seven state universities selected for the ₹100-crore allocation.
Along with North Lakhimpur University, Sibsagar University, Jagannath Barooah University, Nagaon University, Kokrajhar University, Bongaigaon University, and Gurucharan University will also receive similar financial support.
The Budget has earmarked ₹1,750 crore for higher education, covering infrastructure development, financial assistance for autonomous colleges, expansion of the Guru Dakshina scheme, and the continuation of the provincialisation process for eligible venture colleges.
The Finance Minister also announced that 27 autonomous colleges in Assam will receive ₹2 crore each in two instalments to strengthen academic and institutional development.
In addition, the government will continue the provincialisation of eligible venture educational institutions and amend the existing law to revise the cut-off date, enabling more teachers and tutors to become eligible for provincialisation.
The announcement is expected to significantly benefit North Lakhimpur University by improving campus infrastructure and enhancing higher education opportunities for students in the region.
