<nis:link nis:type=tag nis:id=news nis:value=NEWS nis:enabled=true nis:link/> | Raijor Dal MLAs staged a protest on the premises of the Assam Legislative Assembly against the arrest of Kaziranga hotel project opponent and indigenous rights activist Pranab Doley, along with activist Aditya Rabha, accusing the Assam government of targeting those protesting alleged encroachment on tribal land.

Dressed in black, the legislators raised slogans and demanded the immediate release of the two activists.

Leading the protest, Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi alleged that the BJP-led government was attempting to take away land from notified tribal belts and blocks, which are reserved exclusively for indigenous communities.

"The BJP government is snatching away land from tribal belts and blocks-areas designated exclusively for tribal settlement. Leaders from this community, such as Aditya Rabha and Pranab Doley, protested against this move, and the public joined in the protest. However, both of them were arrested over the last two days. That is why we have arrived at the Assembly today, dressed in black, to protest against this action. We will never allow the land of the indigenous people to be snatched away," Gogoi said.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, following an incident involving a commercial vessel that allegedly ignored Iranian navigation orders.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route, carrying nearly 20% of the world's oil and LNG supplies. The announcement triggered fresh concerns over global energy security, with oil prices rising.

In response, the United States carried out airstrikes on Iranian missile sites, drone facilities, naval assets and command centres. The US said the operation was aimed at protecting international shipping after Iran allegedly targeted a commercial cargo vessel transiting the strait.

Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones towards Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE, where several US military bases are located. While air defence systems intercepted many of the projectiles, diplomatic efforts led by Oman continue amid fears of a wider regional conflict.
Fresh landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rainfall disrupted normal life in Arunachal Pradesh's West Kameng district on Sunday, affecting road connectivity and raising concerns over further weather-related disruptions.

Officials said continuous rainfall has saturated hill slopes, resulting in mudslides and debris flows at several locations. The landslides have particularly affected stretches of the strategic Balipara–Charduar–Tawang (BCT) Highway, a vital route connecting Arunachal Pradesh's border areas.

No Casualties Reported

No casualties had been reported from West Kameng till Sunday evening. However, authorities remain on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, across the district and other parts of Arunachal Pradesh over the coming days.

Over 94,000 Affected Across the State

The latest landslides come amid a prolonged monsoon spell that has caused widespread damage across the state since late June.

According to official estimates, more than 94,000 people across 26 districts have been affected by floods and landslides. At least seven people have lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents reported from districts including Keyi Panyor, Anjaw, and Lower Siang, while several others remain missing.

Heavy rainfall has also damaged roads and bridges, blocked highways, and inundated agricultural land in several parts of the state.

Restoration Work Underway

In West Kameng, teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the district administration have been deployed to clear debris and restore traffic on affected roads. Restoration work is currently underway, although officials said it may take some time before normal movement is fully restored.

The district administration has advised residents, especially those living in vulnerable hilly and low-lying areas, to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel on landslide-prone routes, and strictly follow official advisories.
India is set to enter the league of nations operating hydrogen-powered trains, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to inaugurate the country's first such train at Jind Railway Station in Haryana on July 17.

Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the train produces electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapour, making it a zero-emission and eco-friendly mode of transport.

The train comprises two driving power cars and eight passenger coaches, with a seating capacity of 682 passengers and a total carrying capacity of around 2,600. It has successfully completed trial runs between Sonipat, Jind and New Delhi at speeds of 75–120 kmph.

The train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route, covering nearly 356 km daily through two round trips. Capable of travelling up to 1,000 km on a single hydrogen refill, it can also be refuelled in less than 20 minutes.

With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China and the United States in adopting hydrogen-powered rail technology, marking a major step towards sustainable and cleaner transportation.
Assam's Rupa Nirola has brought pride to the state after being selected to represent India at the Miss Deaf World Pageant, scheduled to be held in the Czech Republic from July 20 to 29.

Rupa, a resident of Suklai village in Dimakuchi, Udalguri district, is one of only two deaf contestants from India selected for the prestigious international beauty pageant.

She earned her place after winning the Miss Deaf India Beauty Pageant in Punjab, where she secured the gold medal and the winner's title.

However, financial constraints made it difficult for her family to arrange the expenses for her trip to Europe. Her father, Dharma Nirola, who works at a private company in Guwahati, has a modest income and supports the family.

After learning about the family's situation, Hagrama Mohilary extended financial assistance to support Rupa's participation. A delegation of BPF leaders, led by ABSU Vice President Gautam Sharma, handed over the financial aid to her family.

Rupa is scheduled to leave for the Czech Republic on July 19, with people across Assam wishing her success as she represents India on the global stage.
More than 15.43 lakh people are currently registered as active job seekers in Assam, the state government informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday.

Replying to a starred question raised by MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Minister Prasanta Phukan said that the Directorate of Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship had 15,43,350 active job seekers registered as of June 30, 2026.

The minister also informed the House that the department had recorded 15,82,987 registered job seekers as of March 31, 2016, and has maintained annual employment registration records since then.

Year-wise Registration Trends

According to figures tabled in the Assembly, 11,53,971 job seekers were registered in 2022, during which the department received 10,34,613 fresh registrations.

The number increased significantly in 2023, reaching 20,10,517 registered job seekers, with 8,56,546 new registrations recorded during the year.

In 2024, the total climbed further to 21,16,561, including 1,06,044 fresh registrations.

However, in 2025, the number of active job seekers declined to 11,88,160, while 2,49,765 new applicants registered with the department.

As of June 30, 2026, active registrations stood at 15,43,350, with 3,55,741 new job seekers added during the year.

The government further informed the Assembly that 12,52,731 registrations had either expired or become inactive as of June 30, 2026.

Educational Qualification of Job Seekers

Providing a qualification-wise breakup, Minister Prasanta Phukan said graduates constitute the largest category of registered job seekers, with 6,48,899 registrations.

They are followed by 1,16,159 postgraduates, while the employment register also includes 62,581 technical diploma holders and 65,989 technical graduates.

The figures indicate that a substantial number of skilled and professionally qualified candidates are currently seeking employment across Assam.

The information was placed before the Assembly in response to queries seeking year-wise employment registration data and the educational profile of individuals enrolled with the Directorate of Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship.
Assam has become the first state in India to commercially produce Matcha tea, with Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia launching the country's first commercial batch of the premium green tea.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the achievement, saying it marks a major milestone for Assam's tea industry and will strengthen the global presence of Assam Tea. He said the initiative was made possible through India-Japan collaboration, with the estate spending nearly a decade working alongside Japanese tea experts and manufacturers.

The first batch of Indian-produced Matcha was sold at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), where it fetched Rs 3,000 per kg during Sale 27.

Traditionally produced in Japan, Matcha is made by grinding specially shade-grown green tea leaves into a fine powder. With global demand for Matcha continuing to rise, the new venture is expected to diversify Assam's tea portfolio and create fresh opportunities in specialty tea and export markets.
The Meghalaya government is planning to introduce an ILP-style tourist verification system that will require visitors to undergo a mandatory registration process before entering the state.

The proposed mechanism is aimed at strengthening security, maintaining a record of tourist arrivals, and monitoring the movement of visitors across Meghalaya.

Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira said tourists will be required to check in at designated registration centres, where officials will verify their identity, travel documents, and the purpose of their visit.

The first registration centre is being established at Umling in Ri-Bhoi district, with similar facilities planned across other parts of the state, including the Garo Hills region.

Modelled on ILP States

Although Meghalaya does not implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, Shira said the proposed verification mechanism has been modelled on the procedures followed in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Manipur.

According to officials, the initiative will help the government maintain a comprehensive database of visitors, closely monitor entry into the state, and strengthen measures to detect illegal infiltration.

Verification and Visitor Assistance

Authorities said all visitors, including foreign nationals, will have their identity and travel documents verified to ensure they possess valid documentation.

The proposed registration centres will also function as visitor assistance facilities rather than serving only as verification checkpoints.

Apart from designated spaces for registration and document verification, the centres will provide basic amenities, including restaurants and other services, to make travel more convenient for visitors.

Officials believe the new system will enhance security, enable better monitoring of tourist movement, and maintain real-time records of visitor arrivals across Meghalaya.
Police in Assam’s Barpeta district have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl, secretly filming the act, and circulating the footage on social media.

The accused, identified as Ariful Ali of Palhaji, was apprehended by Majdia police following a First Information Report (FIR) lodged by the victim's family at the Sarthebari police station.

According to the complaint, Ali allegedly assaulted the minor and secretly recorded the act. The family stated that the resulting video, reportedly lasting one hour and 40 minutes, was later uploaded and circulated online without the victim's knowledge or consent.

Police sources indicated that Ali and the minor had known each other for approximately two years and were reportedly in a relationship. When the girl's family discovered the association, they objected and explicitly warned Ali to distance himself from her. While the family noted he initially agreed to their demands, they allege he subsequently resorted to threats to pressure the minor into continuing the relationship.

Acting on the family's FIR, Majdia police conducted a raid to secure Ali's arrest. A case (numbered 65/26) has been registered at the Sarthebari police station under Sections 4 and 14 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police confirmed that an investigation into the incident is actively ongoing. In strict compliance with the legal protections afforded to minors under the POCSO Act, the victim's identity has been withheld.

What if ₹850 could cool your home better than an AC bill worth thousands?

As India faces scorching 44°C temperatures, a man's low-cost roof-cooling trick is grabbing attention online. Using a simple lime (chuna)-based reflective coating, he claims his rooftop stayed around 28-30°C, helping keep his home cooler and reducing dependence on ACs and coolers.

The science is simple: reflective roof coatings bounce back sunlight, reduce heat absorption, and lower indoor temperatures. With heatwaves becoming more intense, many are calling this one of the smartest and most affordable summer hacks for Indian homes.

Would you try this on your rooftop?
